What does LinkWater do?

LinkWater is the Queensland Bulk Water Transport Authority responsible for the management, operation and maintenance of potable (or drinking water) bulk water pipelines throughout South East Queensland (SEQ).

When was LinkWater established?

LinkWater was established in November 2007 as part of the water reform under the South East Queensland Water (Restructuring) Act 2007.

Who does LinkWater report to?

LinkWater's responsible minister is the Minister for Energy and Water Supply.  LinkWater reports to the Department of Energy and Water Supply and Treasury.

What does LinkWater Projects do?

LinkWater Projects is responsible for the design and construction of bulk water pipelines and related infrastructure in SEQ.

Who does LinkWater Projects report to?

LinkWater Projects' responsible minister is the Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.

What water infrastructure is owned and operated by LinkWater?

Most of the large diameter, high pressure pipelines and related infrastructure such as bulk water pump stations in South East Queensland are owned and operated by LinkWater. Your local council owns and operates the smaller "reticulation" pipes from LinkWater's large trunk mains to your home or business and also the waste water network. Which projects are being delivered by LinkWater Projects?

LinkWater Projects is currently delivering the Northern Pipeline Interconnector - Stage 2.  For more information on these projects click here.

LinkWater Projects has also successfully delivered the Southern Regional Water Pipeline, the Northern Pipeline Interconnector and Eastern Pipeline Interconnector.  This infrastructure is now operated and maintained by LinkWater. To learn more about LinkWater Projects, please click here.

What should I do if I'm concerned about the operation or maintenance of a LinkWater asset?

Call LinkWater's Customer Service Centre 24 hours a day on freecall 1800 559 954 if you have any questions relating to a LinkWater asset. 

I have a LinkWater easement on my property, what can and can't I do on the easement?

General activities such as pasturing, laying turf and similar land care activities which do not require major digging or excavation (150mm) are permitted.

If you are intending to undertake any other activity on the pipeline easement, you must submit a proposal to LinkWater prior to commencing any work. For LinkWater's Consent Guidelines, click here.

Some of the activities that require consent are:

  • digging, rock and soil extraction, forestry practices, vegetation clearing, excavation and filling, tunnelling and trenching
  • use of heavy machinery
  • storage of materials
  • planting tree, shrub and plant varieties with long root systems
  • activities related to water management - sewer, irrigation, drainage and storm water
  • building, repairing, altering, moving or demolishing any building or structure
  • reconfiguring a lot by rearranging property boundaries through subdivision etc
  • changing the use of the property or existing structure where the environment may be altered
  • erection of fences, advertising placards or signage and gates.
